Class of 2017

After graduating from Lutheran North in 1991 as Valedictorian, Dr. Holschen continued her education at Washington University in St. Louis.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology summa cum laude from Washington University in 1995.  She continued her education at Washington University School of Medicine to earn her Doctor of Medicine in 1999.

 

Dr. Holschen is board-certified in both emergency medicine and sports medicine.  She has provided medical care to athletes at the collegiate, amateur, Olympic, and professional levels while working with the University of South Carolina, University of Michigan, University of California, the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, and the USA Hockey Women’s National Team.  She served as the team physician for the USA Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. In the past, she has volunteered to provide medical care and services at the Chicago Marathon, the Ironman World Championship, the World University Games, the Superbowl, various local running races, and numerous international tournaments for USA Hockey.  Presently she is employed at Loyola University Hospital in Chicago as an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine.  She is also the team physician for the Chicago Wolves professional ice hockey team in Chicago.

 

Dr. Holschen has presented over one hundred lectures regarding various aspects of sports medicine and related topics.  She has written and published numerous research abstracts, articles, and web-based teaching resources.  In addition, Dr. Holschen has served the American Board of Emergency Medicine on the Sports Medicine Exam Committee, which creates the national board-certifying examination in sports medicine.

 

Lutheran High School has been a major influence in the Huning family. Al met his wife, Barbara ’57, at Lutheran High Central. His children followed in their parent’s footsteps. Matt graduated in ’81 and Mary graduated in ’85 from Lutheran North. As Al played three different sports in high, school, his children followed his same passion for sports as Matt excelled in football and Mary excelled in volleyball.

 

Al was graduated from St. Louis University 1959 with a B.S. Degree in Business. After a short term in the Army, he began his career in banking. He then worked for four years at Union Electric Company and four years for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. These companies served as preparation for his career with Flex-O-Lite where he was employed for thirty years, the last eleven years as President and Chief Operating Officer.

 

Al has been very generous with his time by serving on many boards related to the great Lutheran community of St. Louis. He served for almost twenty years on the Board for Lutheran Family and Children Services. He served on the Lutheran Foundation Board, Lutheran Senior Services, and Lutheran Elementary Schools Association. He was in a leadership position at various times on the listed boards. He received numerous awards for his leadership and very active role in the functioning of these boards.

 

Bill LaMothe attended St. Matthew grade school, Lutheran North High School and Concordia University Seward. He was an all-conference baseball player and football player at Lutheran North. He continued to play baseball and football at Concordia.

 

Bill’s life accomplishments are attributed to hard work. His career in Logistics has taken him around the world. He evolved into an entrepreneur. Bill has started, built and sold great companies.  Bill believes that his success is tied to Lutheran North High School and the support, and encouragement received from teachers, coaches, friends, friend’s parents and his family.

 

Bill started his Logistics career in Houston in 1980. His career moved very rapidly and in 1990 he founded Skyking Freight Systems. In 1999 Skyking was sold to Exel Global Logistics and eventually became the largest Logistics Company in the World. Bill was Exel’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer headquartered in Bracknell, United Kingdom. Bill was part of the executive team during the company’s explosive growth. Today Exel trades as DHL Supply Chain Limited and operates as a subsidiary of Deutsche Post AG.

 

Bill married Merry “Lyn” Dixon in 1979 and they eventually settled in Irving, TX. They raised 4 very successful children. Ashlee, Beau, Brooke and Alec. Ashlee is married to John Howard, Creative Director for Emerge Technologies based in Dallas. Ashlee and John have blessed Bill and Lyn with 2 great-grandchildren Stella and Sloan. Beau is married to Krista Browning, a successful Farmers Insurance Agent in Dallas.

Bill had one of the most outstanding careers in the history of Crusader athletics at Lutheran High School Central.  He earned ten Varsity Letters in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Bill received a scholarship to Missouri University, Columbia to play football under Dan Devine in the 60’s during the “glory days” of Mizzou.

 

At Missouri Bill played running back, behind All-American Johnny Roland. As he was looking at other positions to play, he tried kicking and won a regular spot to play. In 1962 he kicked a forty-five-yard field goal to break a tie with the Cornhuskers and set up a confrontation with Kansas.

 

His twenty-yard kick against the Jayhawks guaranteed a tie, so the undefeated Tigers played Oklahoma.  Despite losing to the Sooners, the team played in the Bluebonnet Bowel where Bill kicked two extra points in a 14-0 win over Georgia Tech. Mizzou finished with 8-1-2 season in 1962.

 

After leaving the University of Missouri in 1965, he played Minor League Baseball. He entered the business world in 1968 as a Sales Representative for Eli Lilly and Company. In 1978 he found his ‘niche’ in Sales-it was Industrial Food Ingredients. After working two years for a broker he became National Sales Manager for Sokol & Co.

 

Three years later Bill started Bull Valley Trading Co. He was the Owner/President and also Sales Consultant to smaller food companies wanting to grow sales. Between 1983 and 2008 he developed Sales Organizations for several US & European Companies and was hired to head Sales & Marketing for Spice Tec Ltd (A Con Agra Co.). He loved working within this industry and was active for more than 25 years in the American Spice Trade Association, where he was President of the Midwest Section.

 

Today, Bill and his wife Jere (married in 1966) live in Anacortes, WA.

After graduating from Lutheran High School Central in 1961, Jim continued his education at Concordia, Seward NE, graduating in 1965 with a B.S. Degree in Education. His first position was as an elementary teacher at Bethel Lutheran School in 1965. He joined the Lutheran North staff in 1968 as a mathematics teacher and football coach. He completed his M.S Degree in Mathematics from St. Louis University in 1970.

 

His teaching career included teaching positions at Parkway Central, Parkway South, Parkway West and Lutheran North  He also taught mathematics as an adjunct instructor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University for thirty-eight years. He taught many summer workshops for students and teachers in technology and mathematics.

 

While he enjoyed his academic experiences and relationships with students in the classroom, it was football that was his passion. Jim became the first (and only) Crusader graduate to coach a Crusader State Championship Team. His 1999 team defeated St. Pius Kansas City 28-21 in the 2A State Championship Game. Prior to his last ten seasons as Head Coach at North, Jim served as Head Coach at Parkway South and as Assistant Varsity Coach at Parkway Central and Parkway West.  He was selected as the Post-Dispatch Coach of the Year in 1999 after winning the Missouri State Championship. Jim was also inducted into the St. Louis Metro Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2009.

 

Nine of his last ten years of coaching football at North, he qualified the Crusaders for the state playoffs. He won the State Championship 1 year, took the team to the final four 3 years, two years to the quarterfinals, and 3 years to the sectional games. Jim coached thirty-seven years with twenty years as a Head Coach. His record as a Lutheran North Head Football Coach was 102–42.

Dr. Moehlenkamp has experienced a broad and rich variety of interests during her life adventures. In high school, her interests in academics, sports, music, and church activities served as a platform for her calling as a Lutheran school teacher. She added traveling (14 foreign countries and 43 states) and volunteer work to her interests in adult life.

 

After high school, Dr. Moehlenkamp attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward, NE earning her B.S. in Education. She earned her M.S.T. from the University of Missouri, Rolla. In 1981 she also completed her Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry at Rolla.

 

Dr. Moehlenkamp’s first teaching position was back at Lutheran North as a science and mathematics teacher and coach. After obtaining her Master’s Degree in 1973 she began teaching science and mathematics and coaching at Concordia University, Portland, OR where she also served as Registrar. Beginning in 1977 she was a teaching assistant at the University of Missouri, Rolla while she worked on her Ph.D. Program. She returned to Concordia, Portland for three years and in1985 accepted the position of Professor of Chemistry at Concordia University Chicago.

 

At Concordia, Chicago Dr. Moehlenkamp helped establish and run the Concordia University Science Olympics for 15 years.  She was the Director of the Concordia University Honors Program for 9 years. She served as the University Marshall for 18 years. She was awarded the Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in 2011. She has participated in numerous conferences and workshops on chemical education, renewable energy, laboratory safety, and other topics related to chemistry education.

 

Marilyn has been very active in church activities, particularly in music at St. John, Forest Park and Grace Lutheran, River Forest. She values her time at Lutheran High School with numerous classmates and faculty, particularly Mr. Gil Daenzer, Mr. Bill Ahlbrand, and Mr. Richard Wallace.

After a successful career playing football and track & field at Lutheran North, Mark accepted a scholarship to play football at the University of Illinois under Coach Bob Blackman. He was a starter at defensive end for his 3 years at the varsity level. At that time, college freshmen did not play on varsity teams and he also started for the freshman team. Illinois posted a winning record for two of the three years Mark played. However, only one Big Ten Team could go to the Rose Bowl at that time. By today’s standards for bowl eligibility, Illinois would have played in two Bowls during Mark’s playing days.

 

He received the George Huff Award for Merit in Academics and Athletics at Illinois in 1972, 1973, and 1974. He was also selected to the Second Team Academic All-Big Ten team in 1974. He graduated in 1975 with a B.S. in Education. Upon completing a successful academic and athletic career at Illinois, Mark was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.

 

Mark joined his father working at Central Pattern Company in Hazelwood MO. After his father retired, Mark became the President of the Company in 1989. He is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the American Foundry Society.

 

Mark is an avid bow hunter and a member of the Pope and Young Club (a club dedicated to enhancing bow hunting skills). Mark has bow hunted in many U.S. states and in Canada, Alaska, and Africa. He is also a “seasoned” pedal bike rider. He has participated in thirteen 100-mile bike rides in the past twelve years to help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The rides have taken him to Death Valley, California, Whitefish, Montana, Killington, Vermont, and other interesting100 mile rides.

 

Mark and his family have a long history of involvement with the Lutheran North sports community. Mark and wife Sue, through Central Pattern, provided material and workspace support for the first Crusader foray into robotics.Mark has assisted with coaching volleyball at North and working with defensive linemen on the football teams. The Petersen Track at North was given as a Memorial to Mark’s brother, Andy by the Petersen family. 

The theme of “A Workshop in Christian Living” was very prominent in the culture of Lutheran High School North during the second half of the 20^th century. Pastor Repp was very instrumental in communicating the meaning of this theme. Through theology classes and daily chapel, the meaning of “Christian Living” came to life in the “Christ Living” of the students in the culture of the school. Pastor Repp’s consistent emphasis and reminder of the Gospel over his thirty-six years of ministry gave significant spiritual meaning to the culture of the “Workshop in Christian Living.”

 

Pastor Repp was graduated from Valparaiso University in 1956 with a BA in Zoology and minor in Greek. He continued his studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis graduating with a Master’s of Divinity in 1961.

 

He began his teaching career at Lutheran Central in 1961, moving to the North campus in 1965, and retired from Lutheran North in 1997. During his tenure as Department Chairman, he established the core theology curriculum with studies in Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Christian Living. He also served as the Dean of Chapel during his thirty-six years, providing a daily worship experience centered about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Repp provided spiritual guidance individually to both students and staff during his tenure at Lutheran High School.

 

He also has served as Assistant Pastor at Unity Lutheran Church in Bel Nor, MO and as a Pastor at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Kinloch, MO and at Berea Lutheran Church in Riverview, MO. Preparations for Baccalaureate Services, various special worship services over the years, and faculty orientations about the integration of religion in the lives of students were part of his ministry at Lutheran High School.

 

Dr. Rowold is a true scholar with extensive experience and knowledge in theology, linguistics, Christian ministry, and Lutheran Church mission work in Southeast Asia. Although he is presently retired, he continues to be involved in projects that call for his expertise. His present title is International Research Emeritus Professor, Institute for Mission Studies.

 

After graduation from high school, Dr. Rowold studied two years at St. Paul College in Concordia, MO and then completed his B. A. at Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, IN. At Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, he received a B.D. and S.T. M. in 1965. He later studied at Christ Seminary in St. Louis and received his Th. D. in 1977. In 1997 he received his Doctor of Letters degree from Concordia University in Portland, OR.

 

While Dr. Rowold has been in ministry for over fifty years, a major portion of his ministry was the thirty years (1965-1995) as a missionary and professor in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China.  In 1995 he began serving as a mission professor at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He presently serves as an International Research Professor Emeritus, a Visiting Professor at the Lutheran Seminary in Hsin Chu, Taiwan, and a Visiting Professor at Concordia Theological Seminary in Hong Kong.

 

Besides his background in Hebrew and Greek, Dr. Rowold is very experienced in Chinese: Mandarin and Taiwanese (Minnan). His knowledge of different languages has served him well in translations for the Chinese community. In addition to Scripture translation, he has also he has also completed a project to translate Luther’s work into Chinese

 

Mavis earned her BS degree in nursing (1979) and Juris Doctorate (1990), both from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She is also a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government program at Harvard University. She has combined her experiences in nursing, legal work, and government positions in the service of others. She has been a leader in all three areas of endeavor.

 

Mavis was the first African American female to serve the city of St. Louis in two different elected offices as the Circuit Clerk and as the License Collector. On April 3, 2009, Mayor Slay claimed the date as “Mavis Thompson Day.” She is also a Past President of the National Bar Association, leading lawyers and judges worldwide. The National Bar Association is the oldest and largest international network of predominantly African American attorneys and judges.

 

She is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts in Missouri and Illinois as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 7^th and 8^th Circuits. She is a member of the National Bar Association, American Bar Association, Mound City Bar Association, the Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis, and Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.

 

Prior to her legal career, Thompson’s nursing experiences included Staff Nurse, Labor and Delivery at Homer G. Phillips and St. John Mercy Hospital in St. Louis as well as Georgetown University Hospital and Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington DC. Other positions included: Assistant Head Nurse, Head Nurse, Director of Nursing, Perinatal Nurse Clinician and Clinical Adjunct Professor of Nursing.

 

Thompson is featured in the “Gains after Lloyd Gaines” display housed at the Missouri University School of Law. The Supreme Court ruled in Lloyd Gaines favor when he was denied admission to the University of Missouri School of Law because he was African American, thus breaking the barriers of racial discrimination.

Dr. Vie completed his college undergraduate work St. Louis University and the University of Missouri. He received a Ph.D. from Concordia University, Wisconsin.

 

Dr. Vie’s career started as a Naval pilot. He was named the youngest Naval aircraft commander in the largest squadron in the Pacific, through the Airborne Early Warning Squadron. This experience led him to become the Co-chairman of the Chicago Navy Memorial at Navy Pier and chairman of the United States Naval Memorial in Washington D.C. He also is the Chairman and Founder of Military Outreach U.S.A. and holds all three of these positions today.

 

With his military background, he carried his service leadership skills into the insurance industry. He served as Senior Vice President for Reliable Life Insurance from 1962-1979. He then served as CEO of Commonwealth Life Insurance 1980-1982. He became the Senior Vice President Board of Directors, Unitrin Insurance, Inc., Chicago from1983-1991. Next, he became the President, CEO, Unitrin Insurance, Inc., Chicago from 1992-1999. He followed this appointment by becoming the Chairman, President, CEO Unitrin Inc. Insurance, Chicago from 1999-2006. His last position in the insurance corporate world was as Chairman, Kemper Insurance Co. Chicago from 2006-2009.

 

Dr. Vie was featured in eight volumes of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, ten volumes of Who’s Who in the Midwest, and in the first edition of Who’s Who in Corporate America. He was in demand for university board leadership positions serving on three of our Concordia University Boards of Regents in Wisconsin, Chicago, and Irvine. He also served on the Board of Directors for Valparaiso University.

 

Dr. Vie provided leadership over the years in the effort to provide Lutheran secondary and elementary education in the urban communities of Chicago.

Dr. Young received his B.S. in Education from Concordia University Chicago in 1956. He received his M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1960. In 1968 he was granted his Doctorate Degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.

 

Lutheran education is part of the fabric of the Young family. Dr. Young has four children (all graduates of a Lutheran high school). His nine grandchildren include six Lutheran high graduates, one presently attending a Lutheran high, and two are at a Lutheran elementary school.

 

Dr. Young’s career has taken two paths within the Lutheran educational community. His passion for mathematics (which he credits to mathematics teacher Iris Guenther at Lutheran High) led him to become a mathematics professor at Concordia University Chicago and later to leadership positions at Concordia.

 

Dr. Young’s career as a mathematics teacher was highlighted by his award as the Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Concordia University Chicago in 1997. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics 1977-1978. He then served as the President of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics from 1978-1979.
