College & Career Counselors Take to Zoom to Continue Helping Students Prepare for College Acceptances

Each year, Lutheran North counselors meet in person with every junior to start preparing for college. Juniors share ideas on their career plans and top colleges that they would like to attend after they leave Lutheran North. Additionally, students are guided to understand their remaining graduation requirements for their senior year.

Despite the challenges, the Coronavirus didn't stop the Lutheran North career and counseling department from having meetings with each student. Instead of in-person meetings, Cindy Burreson, Director of College Counseling, conducted the meetings online using Zoom.

“I much prefer to meet with juniors in person, face-to-face, but I am very thankful for Zoom and the ability to see the students when we do meet," Burreson said. "I think it's more comfortable and easier to talk and share in person.  And it's easier to read body language and reactions in person."

Juniors prepared for their individual meetings with a list of colleges they would like to attend and a list of the credits they need.

“I think I’m ready for my junior meeting. I know what areas I need to raise my scores in so I can get into the colleges of my choice," Junior Briana Jackson said. "I’m kind of scared for the future. I’m not going to lie. I like talking about it though because it's exciting, but also nerve-wracking.”

With the help of Mrs. Burreson, LN students can rest easy knowing they have a plan for success.

“I've seen about half the juniors so far, and I look forward to prepping for each meeting by reviewing the transcript and the college/career survey, praying with the student, and talking about future careers and options of how to get there," Burreson said. "It's the best part of my job!”

The 64 members of the Class of 2019 were accepted to 103 colleges and universities. Collectively they were offered $7.5 million in scholarships and accepted $3 million. Students attend 36 different colleges and universities across 13 states, and one student serves in the United States Air Force.
